Cow Dog & Obedience Training Clinic

March 3rd & 4th ~ 2012

at Stonesthrow Arena, Newberg, OR

Would you like to train your dog to work cattle the right way? Does your dog work cattle but could use some refresher training? How about working on obedience issues your dog is having? Come spend the weekend with Marvin Pierce and learn how to work your dog on cattle and have a better behaved, obedient partner! In this clinic we will cover: Basic respect and obedience, dogs that chase horses and other stock, cattle gathering, penning with your dog, keeping the dogs attention with you, having a successful recall, aggressive issues with your dog and others and dogs that bark as well as requested help!

Let Marvin show you how to get the most out of your Cow Dogs and how to turn an ill-behaved dog you’re afraid to take anywhere into a great partner that goes everywhere with you!

Marvin has been training cow dogs for the past 13 years with great success. His dogs work cattle on ranches with 100s of head, helping to move these large herds. Marvin also does demonstrations with his dogs at bucking bull events, county and state fairs, and for private parties.

NOTE: Goats or Sheep will be provided for the January clinic. This allows clinic participants with younger dogs or smaller breeds to work them on smaller, safer stock.

Folks from all over the state call Marvin when they need help gathering loose or wild cattle, from local farmers and ranchers to the state police!  That’s just how good his dogs are …and his training is!

Saturday & Sunday – 3-3, 3-4:

8am – 4pm Cow Dog & Obedience Clinic

On Saturday Marvin will help folks get their dogs started on cattle the “right” way. Marvin will cover the fundamentals of starting a dog on cattle to fine-tuning a dog that’s already working cattle. He’ll also help folks overcome common and “not-so-common” obedience issues such as fighting, chasing horses, not coming when called and unruly & ill-mannered behavior.

Marvin’s main objective is that folks leave the clinic with a dog that is better behaved, smarter on cattle and a pleasure to be around. And as always he wants everyone to have FUN! Some specifics that will be covered in the clinic are:

  • pen cattle using your dog
  • get your dog to “down” when asked
  • position you dog so you can get your cattle penned
  • have your dog come to you when called
  • teach your dog to leave your horses alone
  • keep your dog from fighting other dogs
  • address discipline issues such as aggression, barking, running off, chasing horses/livestock and more
  • keep your dogs attention on YOU, no matter how busy and chaotic the environment
  • …as well as covering individual training issues and participant-generated requests
